Questions about the 4th, Suntans and Hot Dogs and What I Wore

1. How did you celebrate the 4th of July? (Or, for you international types . . . Do anything fun this weekend?)

My brother, sister-in-law and sister-in-blood who is an actual religious sister are in town, so we had a cook-out at my parent's house with lots of yummy food and charred hamburgers.   Then we had an impromptu show with the kids telling stories and singing.  And the nun performed too...with my other sister (and supposedly me, but I don't sing).   We had the nun's famous ice cream cake (not to be confused with Kendra's kid's ice cream cake).  Then they came back to my house and the adults watched Bourne, while the kids watched a kid movie. and once it was dark enough, we did sparklers and pop-its.  Although to tell you the truth, I was starting to doze off during Bourne..but I woke up for the sparklers. 

Then once it was really dark, we climbed up on the roof, got eaten by mosquitoes and watched fireworks.  People get crazy about fireworks about here, so we don't even know whose we were watching, but in all 4 directions from us, *someone* was setting off fireworks. LATE into the night.

2. Do you sunburn easily?

No, I will tan and get darker and darker and darker and darker until I look like I'm another ethnicity.

The summer after I graduated from college, I volunteered with Christian Appalachian Project in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.  I spent the entire summer outdoors and didn't burn, but got super dark.

Then I went to graduate school at the University of Kentucky and at one of those meet and greets, I had the following conversation with someone. 

A graduate student no less.

Other graduate student: Where are you from?

Me:  Rhode Island

Other graduate student  Is that in the Caribbean?

Me: Uh no..it's in New England, right by Massachusetts.

Other Graduate Student: Oh...um...well..I just thought you looked like you might be from someplace exotic. 
Me: No...no place exotic. 

3. Hot dogs. Yay or nay?

I like them okay, but they aren't my favorite or anything.  I would prefer a burger. If I do eat a hot dog, it is plain...no bun. I can't stand hot dog buns (or hamburger buns or cheap, white bread buns of any sort).  And, I only really like the healthy ones...without all the nitrates and junk. 

4. Have you ever personally set off fireworks?

No.  As a general rule, I don't do things that could be considered dangerous.  

5. Have you ever jumped off the high dive?

No. See above answer. Plus, I'm not a great swimmer, and I hate going underwater. 

6. Do you do anything weird in your sleep?

I've been told that I occasionally talk in my sleep, but just occasionally, so usually no. 

And, I haven't done a What I Wore Sunday in a long time..but what the heck.  I'll go for it now.

Happy Father's Day Answers

Answering more questions with Kendra. 

1. What's the best thing about your dad?

He's super smart, he doesn't care what anything thinks about him and he's super, super, super generous and giving.  He always has been.  He's also been very generous with his time and money when it comes to helping others....especially his wife and children, but other people as well.

He puts up with my mom (who is a wonderful person, but very much a BOSS).  That probably qualifies him for sainthood.

He slaves super hard in the garden so his family can eat all sorts of organic vegetables all summer long.

Even at age (almost) 70 he was helping us move....lifting lots of heavy furniture, carrying boxes.

He may be retired, but he never stops working. 

He's also pretty quirky and does his own thing and doesn't care what anyone thinks,   In the 60's when everyone else was rebelling by listening to rock n' roll.....he rebelled by listening to Mozart and Bach and Beethoven and all those guys.

2. If you've got kids, what's the best thing about THEIR dad? (If you don't, feel free to substitute your grandfather or another father figure.)

He's very patient and doesn't get angry easily.   He almost never loses his temper (unlike me) and is basically the calm to my storm.   He loves to spend time with his kids....playing chess, watching movies, playing Frisbee.   I'm the one who always talks about being gentle and patient with kids...but he's the one who actually IS all those things. 

Plus he's super smart...yet very humble.  Smart but arrogant people are annoying.  Smart, but humble people are great.

He loves God. He loves the Church.  He loves me.  He loves our kids. He loves my family.

At age 32, he went to law school, at age 35 he passed the VA bar exam.  At age 36, he passed the IN bar exam.  And at age 37 he started his own law firm.  He's a hard worker and is always wiling to help others.

Plus he puts up with me (no easy task, I tell you) and ALWAYS  supports me in all my CRAZY ideas. And, I've had some crazy ones.  

3. What's the best advice your dad ever gave you?

Umm....never trust anyone over 30?  Actually my dad never gave that as advice, but it's something he likes to say.

My dad doesn't give a lot of advice  Or maybe I just don't pay attention.   He mostly teaches by example.

I always remember him saying how when he was in graduate school, he had like $2.50 a day to eat with, so he figured out that sunflower seeds offered him the most nutrition (proteins, vitamins, fats) per dollar, so he ate lots of sunflower seeds.  Most starving grad students would just live off coffee and noodles and hot dogs...but not my dad.  He was all into healthy eating before it was cool.

He also taught us to go to Confession every month and to never be late for Mass (that one didn't stick..the never being late one that is). 

4. What's something you have in common with your dad? 

According to my mom, I have lots in common with my dad.  We are both messy (I'm getting neater, and he's just as messy as ever).  We both tend to rush and do things quickly.  We both have messy handwriting.  We are definitely NOT perfectionists.  And we're both good at science.  Well..he has a PhD in Organic Chemistry and I merely took Organic Chemistry (and got an A-), so he's better than me in that regard.

5. What's the manliest thing you know how to do?

Well....let's just say that I'm the one who fixed our toilet when it was clogged beyond hope. 

I also like mowing the lawn and can check the oil and the coolant and all those things (and add more if necessary).

6. Who is your favorite fictional dad?

Carson Drew....Nancy Drew's father.  Because he's perfect.....just like Nancy.

What I Wore Sunday is BACK and some Answers!

1. Any big plans for the summer?

Not particularly. We will probably go to the annual family reunion at the end of June.  My sister the sister will be coming for her home visit.  My kids are doing some (free) lessons through the local parks and rec. Heidi and Greta are in a summer play.  I will hopefully be starting some independent contractor work at home.   And, I'm helping my husband start a law firm.  So...busy, but not big.

2. What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?

I believed that Santa Claus was a real angel (blame that on watching Highway to Heaven). 

I believed my mom when she said that each of her gray hairs was caused by a specific child and incident. 

3. What is your favorite amusement park ride? (can be a specific one at a specific park or just a type of ride)

I don't really care for amusement park rides.  I get motion sickness and the idea of being hurled through space at breakneck speed is not my idea of a fun time.   I guess, I sorta like bumper cars but honestly, if I never go to an amusement park again I will be totally happy.

4. What's on your summer reading list?

Just business stuff.  Things with absolutely thrilling titles like How to Market Your Law Firm for Idiots Who Hate Marketing and Don't Like Pushing Themselves on People, Selling Things or Networking. (Unfortunately that's not a real title, but it should be).

5. Have you ever fallen asleep in public?

Yes, in a movie theatre while watching Lord of the Rings. <blush>  In my defense, I think I was pregnant, so extra tired.

6. What is your favorite smell?

I love food smells....vanilla, chocolate, coffee.  I also love essential oil smells...frankincense, lavender, oregano, basil. 

And since I'm linking up, guess I'll go all out and post What I Wore Sunday.  Haven't done this in awhile.

And, I almost never wear my hair back, but I did today, because I'm don't like drying/straightening my hair, but if I don't, it looks I have an 80's perm....no perm actually necessary.  So, I read that for wavy hair, putting it in a bun and leaving it until completely dry can make it more straight without blow drying.   We'll see how it works, but I definitely needed a shower this morning, so I decided to just throw it back. I'm sure it will still have some wave, but hopefully won't be super curly.  I'm always on the look-out for easy ways to get good hair without lots of heat or chemicals.  Although I do use argan oil, anti-frizz serum, which helps. 

Why I Don't (Usually) Wear Sunglasses and Other Dumb Stuff about Me (Plus What I Wore)

Linking up with Kendra for her last Answer Me This before she retires the whole thing for the time being.  So here are this week's questions and answers. 

1. What is your favorite picture book?

I really love this book. 

And this one. 

This is such a fun poem book.

There are both really fun books to read aloud and generally I'm not a fan of reading aloud, so I appreciate any book that makes it more fun.

2. Are you a boycotter?

No, not really.  I don't really have any strong feelings on boycotting one way or the other but we generally choose which businesses to patronize based on a few factors (cost, location, and what they carry) and I just don't bother with adding in another factor about what other companies they they might or might not support in a tangential way (plus it seems to keep changing and I read conflicting reports). So as long as I'm not directly giving my money to a place I don't support or don't agree with, I don't really worry about it. 

3. How do you feel about cheese?

I'm a big fan of cheese.  All types (except fake cheese..can't stand that stuff). I don't eat gluten for health reasons, but I'm so glad I can eat cheese, because giving up cheese would be way, way, way harder than giving up gluten. 

4. How many pairs of sunglasses do you own?

I think we may have 2 or 3 pairs lying around.  I very, very rarely wear sunglasses (only if I'm someplace where the sun is unusually bright..like the ocean during midday) and even then I frequently don't wear them.  There are a few reasons for this. 

1) I wear glasses...I sorta need them to see and I think sunglasses that are big enough to fit over my glasses look dorky on me.  And, I don't like the look of those sun-darkening prescription glasses.  I just think that people who wear them look a little...um...shady.  No offense to anyone who wears them...I just don't care for them. 

Plus, I'm crazy and believe everything I read on the Internet.  Just kidding.  But, I did read that sunglasses interfere with how your eyes (and consequently your brain) interpret the amount of light and this can have negative consequences on mood and burning.  Melanin production is triggered by sun on skin, but I wouldn't be surprised if the eyes and how much light they perceive play a role as well. Sunglasses interfere with the brain's perception of the amount of light there is (making your brain think you are in a darker environment) and consequently some of the mood-increasing benefits of sunlight may be lost. 

Makes sense to me anyway.

Plus, before I got regular glasses, I used to wear sunglasses all the time and my eyes got SO SENSITIVE to the sun.  I mean, I would have to wear sunglasses to drive even on cloudy days or rainy days.  It was crazy.  When I stopped wearing sunglasses every time I stepped out of the house, it was a big adjustment, but over time my eyes got less and less sensitive to the sun and now most of the time I don't even feel that I need them.

5. How long has it been since you went to the dentist?

It was about 8 months ago. And that visit inspired this rant. 

6. If you could visit any religious site in the world, where would you go? 

Seeing as how I've never been to any religious sites anywhere, I have no idea.  Probably the Vatican.

I had a hard time deciding what to wear today.  Ended up with a black/white theme.  Original.   We went to Mass at a friary for a special occasion and the friary has a "modesty policy" (ie. no sleeveless) and no air-conditioning...so I had to dress to be modest but also not overheat.  Of course, I'm just a big wimp when it comes to the heat, because while I was all worried about being too hot, my husband wore a shirt and tie, and the friars and sisters wear wool habits.  So yeah...I feel a little guilty that I even worry about getting too hot.  Anyway.

Answer Me This: Houses, TV' Shows and the Sign of Peace.

Answering more questions from Kendra. 

1. What is your favorite room in the house?

We live in a house that has more people than rooms (6 people and only 5 rooms) so that's kinda a tough question.  My favorite room is whichever room has no one else currently in it...which probably means the bathroom.  And, our bathroom isn't that great. 

2. Do you subscribe to any magazines or other periodicals?

No, we don't subscribe to any, but we do get a few magazines and periodicals because we belong to organizations that send them out. Indiana Lawyer, Chess Life, Chess Life for Kids and the AAA magazine are the ones I can think of right now. 

We also get alumni magazines from where we went to college/graduate school...so University of Rhode Island, Transylvania University and University of Kentucky.  We've moved so many times, that I'm not sure how they find us, but they always, always, always do.  It's almost spooky.

3. How do you feel about the sign of peace in Mass? Enriching? Awkward? Overdone? Just right? Some combination of the above?

Generally I find it to be awkward, but I just tend to find those sorts of things awkward. 

4. What is your least favorite sound?

A baby (or even a kid) crying. 

5. What was your favorite TV show (or shows) growing up?

I loved that PBS show Square One.  Yep, I'm a geek.

6. What are your favorite TV shows now?

We don't have actual cable, so I just watch online.  I like:

Dick Van Dyke Show

Downton Abbey

Although I think we're about to cancel Netflix and switch over to Amazon Prime. So, then I'll have to find new shows to watch.  Any suggestions for things available on Prime?  I'm a little nervous about it because I tend to do a lot of impulse Amazon Prime shopping.  We haven't had Prime several months and my online shopping expenditure decreased significantly during that time. So, I'm going to to have to be strict with myself.

My "Controversial" Sunday Outfit...and Some Non-Controversial Questions.

So, Tusday's post of this week turned out to be somewhat controversial....which was totally to be expected.  Friday's post however was decidedly not controversial, which was also to be expected. 

However, my brother said that no controversy = no fun, so I promised him a controversial Sunday outfit.  

This was the best I could do.

First of all...lime and pink and a weird pose? 

 My own daughters did not approve of the color combination.

"Pink doesn't match green, Mom" 

So, I was all daring with my color combination.

And, sleeveless in church?? I know some people don't approve of that either...but I personally have no problem with a sleeveless top depnding on the cut of it.  I wouldn't wear a tank top to church but sleeveless is fine with me.  I'll begrudgingly follow modesty guidelines if they are posted, but I will also admit that I'm not a fan of them.

  Now, for some more questions from Kenda.

1. What do you still want to do this summer?

Well, I would like to get Elsa fully out of diapers before her 2nd birthday on September 11th (probably not going to happen).  And, even more than that, I would like my husband to find a good, full-time paying job before the end the summer (he managed to come up with pro-bono, part-time legal work, but you know...we kinda need money.  That's what I want..anyway...not sure if it will happen. 

I've never really had a summer bucket list and my ideal summer would basically look just like the rest of the year, but with swimming and the occasional family visit and reunion thrown in. 

2. What's your favorite kind of pie?

My philosophy of dessert is that if it's not chocolate, it's not worth it.  So, I guess I would say that chocolate pie is my favorite.

3. How much sleep do you need each day? How much do you get?

I need about 8 hours. Usually I do get around that much. 

4. Do you prefer to swim in a pool, lake, river, or ocean?

I prefer to not swim at all, but if I have to (like to keep a toddler from drowning herself)...I much, much prefer a pool.  I hate seaweed and icky things like that. Plus the ocean is always cold.   Lakes are okay, but there's fish and plants and lots of times the bottom is slimy. 

5. Do you know any poems by heart?

Yes...I know the ones that John memorized last year for Kindergarten. I don't know the girl's poems though..they memorized them on their own without help. 

6. Do you use the public library?

Are there people who actually don't use the public library?  I love the library.  One of the first things we do when we move is get a library card. And, I've learned the trick of getting one for each of my older kids.  That way if one card gets black-listed, we can use another one (did I just admit that??).  Don't worry..I still pay the fine...eventually. And, I still use library cards from Florida and Rhode Island to check out e-books. 

I actually really love the library where we live now.  The main library is HUGE with a great selection.  I found some new books from my favorite authors and so far we've been able to find most of the books that the girls need for school.  Plus they have chess club and free homeschool art lessons and a bunch of other activities that seem cool.  So yes...we use the library. 

Answer Me This: Why I Hate Summer

Answering more questions this Sunday afternoon!

1. When driving, are you more likely to listen to the radio, to CDs or an iPod, or nothing?

This is what I listen to. Not the actual song, but the title and context of the song. (Although I do love this song and if I have kids in the car, there is no actual silence). 

  

 2. Do you prefer window or aisle? 

I'm guessing this refers to flying.  I don't fly often enough to have a preference.  I guess I would slightly prefer window, but really I fly so rarely that I never really thought about it. 

 3. Do you fall asleep on your side, back, or stomach? What position are you in when you wake up? 

I always fall asleep on my side.  If I'm lucky I wake up on my back.  If I'm unlucky, I wake up on my side, usually with a baby still latched on, stiff and sore. 

4. When is the last time you attended a zoo, circus, carnival, county fair, or parade? 

Umm...I guess last summer.  It's been at least a year. I think last summer we went to the 4-H county fair.  I think...I can't remember for sure.  If not then, then I'm sure we went to the  Naples Zoo sometime in March or April or May of 2013....during one of their free days for residents.  And the last parade...well I guess in Nov. 2012, we were IN the swamp buggy parade in Naples, FL. That was fun.  We went to a circus in Florida as well....one of our friends gave us free tickets.  

We're so lame....we hardly ever go to those types of things.  I love zoos if I have a membership, but that hasn't been in our budget for awhile.  I generally hate county fairs and carnivals as I consider them to be nothing more than a money-sucking, dehydration-inducing waste of time. 

 5. Do you have a favorite quote or inspirational saying? 

I had to look at my Facebook page to see if I do.  Sad, sad, sad.  I'm not much for inspirational quotes.

 6. What's the best thing about summer?

Visiting family....summer is when my sister (from the convent) visits and my little brother and sister-in-law visit.   So...that's fun.  I always love to see them.  And we have family reunions in the summer...so get to see aunts and uncles and cousins...something I also love to do. 

Otherwise, I hate summer.  I can't stand the heat. I hate the lack of routine and lack of regular activities.  Routine and activities keep me sane.  I love looking at our calendar and having regularly planned activities and classes and coops and field trips.  I hate that all those things seem to stop in the summer.   I hate the unstructuredness of summer.  Other people get depressed in the winter...I get depressed in the summer.  Most of all, I associate summer time with job searching and stress and uncertainty.  I got married in Dec. 2000.  Since then, we've spent the summers of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2014 in a state of job searching, stress-filled uncertainty. Most of that job-searching resulted in long-distance moving for a new job.   I'm sick of it and I hate it and associate summer time with that stress.  We've always gotten a job and always been taken care of, but I hate, hate, hate, hate the summer job searching thing.  HATE IT!  

Well...this has been a bright, sunshiny-post, no?  Go see Kendra for hopefully more positive and uplifting answers.

Time for your regularly scheduled Sunday link-up.  Just some nice easy reading for you.  Questions from Kendra and What I Wore Sunday from FLAP.

So, here's what I wore.

Pretty basic outfit but I did get all fancy and add the scarf with it.  I got the scarf from my new sister-in-law.  I wore it in their wedding...it's a great scarf.

Now...onto the questions.

1. What’s something you've won and how did you win it?

Well, the most impressive thing I've won...if you can call it "winning", is the Highest GPA Award (it wasn't called that, it had some fancy name I can't remember..like the Some Person Award for Highest GPA) for my high school. Fortunately though, I didn't have to make the valedictorian speech...I guess I didn't have the highest GPA when they were assigning the speech (before the last semester's grades were in), but I did once the final grades were calculated. Apparently I was just as much of a nerd the last semester of my senior year as I was all the previous semesters. 

2. Do you save old greeting cards and letters, or throw them all away? Why?

Mostly, I throw them away.  We've moved way too many times for me to be encumbered with old greeting cards.  I do save personal letters...but I rarely get letters.  No one writes letters anymore. 

3. When you’re at home, do you wear shoes, socks, slippers, or go barefoot?

Depends on the season.  I'm barefoot if it's warm enough..in the winter when it's cold I usually wear at least socks and frequently socks and shoes. 

4. Who’s the most famous person you have ever met? 

Sadly enough, it was probably Patrick Kennedy. Although, Congressman Chris Smith (from New Jersey) almost had to DELIVER me 36 years ago. Apparently on the day I was born, he (and another big-wig pro-life leader) were at my mom's house working on pro-life work. Unbeknown to them, while my mom was working on pro-life stuff and serving them hot dogs for lunch, she was also laboring.  What a feat of multi-tasking! They finally left at 2 PM and I was born at 4 PM (at the hospital..they barely made it in time). 

5. What has been your best work of art?

Probably..this blog.  Or maybe My Home Remedies Website.

Or my kids.  I do make cute kids.

Even when a certain one is grouchy because he doesn't like wearing suspenders and a bow tie. 

6.  What’s your strongest sense?

I have no sense, seriously.  My eyesight isn't that great. My hearing isn't either.  Nor is my sense of smell (I think years of working around animals obliterated). I certainly don't have a lot of common sense.  And my instinct/gut/primal sense is usually pretty off too...because I'm constantly thinking something bad is going to happen and then it doesn't. 

Actually I go have a good "pregnancy-sense" which means I can oftentimes tell when someone is pregnant before they announce it. Seriously....even when they announce it really early...I usually "knew" or "suspect" something.  It even works for people on the Internet that I never even met..I just sometimes "sense" that someone is pregnant before they announce it. 

It doesn't work on myself though....only other people. 

And, don't worry..even if I think you are...I would NEVER ask!

1. How did you get your name?

I was named after my maternal grandmother. And, I have TWO first cousins who have little girls (one is still in utero) that have the middle name "Amelia" named after that same grandmother.  When I was growing up, I knew NO ONE named Amelia.  No One.  However, in the past 15 years or so, the named has really gained popularity.  I'll never forget the first time I ran into a little kid named Amelia.  It was over 10 years ago, at the playground, and I kept hearing a dad calling his little girl "Amelia."  It was pretty surreal, because I've NEVER heard anyone say the name "Amelia" and not be calling ME.  NEVER. Since then, I've ran into a few other Amelias and it's still weird.  I can't get used to not being the only "Amelia" around. 

My middle name is Marie, and I was named after the Blessed Mother. 

2. Do you have a set time for prayer in your day?

      

We say prayers at night with the kids.  Otherwise, not so much.   I've been trying more to pray throughout the day.  Usually if I need something  Dear Lord, please don't let me kill anyone today or St. Anthony, help me find the wallet (St. Anthony failed us, we never did find it and are in the process of replacing everything).    And, I tend to read a lot of prayer requests...on blogs or facebook, so I try to say a quick prayer for the person right then and there (otherwise I will forget). 

3. Did your mom work or stay home (or both)?

She stayed home.  Although she worked at home as a writer.  She published this book when I was in middle school and this book when I was in high school.  And, she has since published several more books. 

4. Do you vote?

Most of the time, yes.  I'm not crazy about the voting push that everyone does though.  I hate it when people are all, vote, vote, vote, it doesn't matter who you vote for, just vote.   First of all, it DOES matter who you vote for.   

I tend to think that people should only vote if they are generally informed.  I've skipped voting for questions on polls because I didn't feel like I could make informed decision. Oh...and if you're voting for the wrong man or woman, STAY HOME.  <wink>

5. What's your favorite drink?

Water is what I drink 99% of the time...but I really enjoy a good glass of wine, a frozen latte or a good cup of coffee.  I drink those  rarely.  I'm not a huge fan of things like soda, lemonade, iced tea, juice, etc. 

6. How are your photography skills?

I think they are fairly decent for someone who only owns a simple, point and shoot, digital camera.  I do know some good photography tricks (using light, angles and distance that help take decent photos).   But, I don't have a fancy-schmancy camera so I haven't put too much time into learning.   Someday I would like to.
