7 Reasons My Kids Play Chess...And Why Yours Should Too

Okay, I'm not going to actually tell you what your kids should do....cause this blog isn't about telling people what to do.

I am, however, going to tell you about all the benefits I've discovered from our kids playing chess.

I'm not a chess player....wait...let me take that back.  Technically I am card-carrying member of the United States Chess Federation and I have a rating (302...which if you don't know, is not very good).   I even won the Third Place Medal in the Kentucky State Women's Chess Championship in 2001.   I lost every single game...amazingly they still gave me a medal...that's what happens when there are only three women players.

As I was saying, I'm not a chess player...but I married one...a really good one that played in competitive tournaments and won money even occasionally.   So, I started to play a little bit, but I was never that into it.  I just don't have the competitive nature to play chess.

But...my kids are really into chess.  Really, really into it.  I'm constantly shocked at how much time they spend playing chess and talking about chess and studying chess and watching chess videos.   They are constantly coming to me and saying things like Mom, you should see this game I played. I played e4 and he played knight g6 and then I castled and we traded queens and he sacked his bishop and we had the Lucena position and then a rook endgame.  Meanwhile I'm all oh, yes, the rook endgame, fascinating.

And, if you are a chess player reading this (cough, Ben, cough) cut me some slack if the above makes no sense.  I just made it up...as I said, I'm not a chess player.

My kids have known how to play chess for several years, but it wasn't until we moved to Virginia that there were actually able to play in tournaments....hence when they started to get really into it.  And, since that time, I've noticed some awesome benefits about playing chess.

1.
Chess is cheap, as far as activities go.  Sure, you can spend a lot of money flying to national tournaments and all (and we might do that once we actually have some money to spare) but for now, we just stay local and that is plenty fun for them.  Or, you could spend big bucks and pay a Master to teach your kids, but you don't need that.  My husband got to a pretty high rating in chess, all being self-taught.  The equipment is minimal and tournament entry fees are usually very affordable.   Plus, it doesn't take a huge commitment. You can go to tournaments or not...depending on your schedule...there is no major time commitment involved. There are lots of great chess programs and books and other ways that kids can teach themselves, all very affordable.

2.
You win some, you lose some.  And that is important.  It teaches kids how to both win and lose gracefully.  Which is a really, really, really important skill to learn.   Chess is an individual game...so you can't count on your teammates to help you during a game...it's just you, so you have to learn to handle pressure and stress and winning and losing all by yourself.  Sometimes you have a good tournament and take home a trophy, and sometimes you lose more games than you win.  And, that's okay, because you have to learn how to handle both situations.

3.
It teaches you to slow down and really think. Good chess players really think about their moves and consider them carefully before making a move.  It takes persistence and practice to really think about your moves and not just make the first move that comes to mind.  I'm constantly amazed at how Heidi and Greta have been known to play really long games...over an hour even, because they (and their opponent) are really taking the time to carefully consider their moves.

4.
Age and size don't matter.  Every single one of my kids could beat me at chess, easily. Chess isn't about who is the oldest or who is the strongest.  It's pretty funny to see this little kid beat a much older kid, or even adults.  There is some advantage to age, but not as much as you might think.

5.
Critical Thinking. Chess improves critical thinking skills and logic skills.  You have to anticipate your opponent's move, you have to learn to apply strategy to different situations and you have to think ahead....many, many, many moves ahead. Plus, Ben says that chess helped him during law school...so if you think your kids might want to go to law school, have them play chess.

6.
Improved Math Skills. Seriously..I do think that playing chess has improved my kids math skills.  As a homeschooler, math is our worst subject...nothing against math, it's just..you know...math.  So, improved skills and better retention of math facts is a definite plus.

7.
Chess brings people together. Well...at least other chess players that is.  According to Ben, if you sit down somewhere and set up a chess set, people will come over and want to play with you.  So, apparently there is the whole social chess network, where chess players are drawn to other so they can chat over strategy and games. So, even as adults, it's a good social skill to have.  Plus, my kids spend an inordinate amount of time going over their games with each other and with other kids.  So, it brings them together, because they like to replay their games, discuss strategy and and argue over moves.  Yes, they do argue over moves....it's all part of the fun.

So, those are my reasons why chess is so great for kids.  Any other chess players or chess moms/dads want to chime in with any benefits you've noticed?

7 Quick Takes Friday....I'm calm, I'm cool...I'm collected

1.

or maybe not.

Actually, I'm all cool and collected on the outside

But, on the inside...I'm all

OMGOSHWENEEDAJOBBUTWEDONTHAVEONEANDWELLHAVERTOMOVEBUTWEDONTKNOWWHEREANDICANTPLANANDWEWONTHAVEMUCHTIME

If you can read that...great...if not..just know that we need prayers for jobs (to find one) and moving (cause we gotta do it and it's gonna be long-distance) and bar exams (cause he gotta pass) and my sanity (because it's going..ha..ha).

2.

On a good note..cutest-baby-in-the-world-Elsa who is not-quite 11-months old yet, just started walking.  She only takes a few steps at a time, before falling but she's getting there and she could probably get a lot further if there weren't so many obstacles (ie toys/pillows/junk/what-have-you) in her path.

thinking about taking a few steps

arms out for balance

foiled by the pillows

3.

Have you ever done a Meyer-Briggs Personality test?
I just did one, and came up as ISFJ....which actually explains A LOT about me.

And, then I did this one and came up with ESFJ which basically goes along with what I thought....I'm a pretty even mix of both extroverted and introverted.

Or, maybe I just have split personality.

That could explain a lot.

4.

A family member just did IQ tests on the older three kids as part of her work/studies. It was very interesting.  Apparently, my kids are all gifted and I'm not challenging them enough.
Sigh.  It's good to know though..now I just need to figure out what I may need to change in our homeschooling.

5.

Oh..and did you know I have Facebook Fan page?  Go like it if you're one of those people who like to follow blogs on Facebook.

6.

Rain
by Robert Louis Stevenson

The rain is raining all around.
It falls on field and tree
It rains on the umbrellas here
And, on the ships at sea.

Just thought I would throw a little poetry in...to up intellectual appeal of this blog.
Plus, as I am writing this, the rain is pouring down.
Anyone want to guess what homeschool curriculum we are using for a certain kindergartner (who according to take number 4 should be in 1st grade or possibly 2nd)?

7.

And, speaking of homeschool curriculum..as part of the kindy curriculum we've been reading this series.

Which is absolutely charming...but dangnabit, I'm totally jealous of a fictional little boy in a story from the 1930's, because darn it. I've always wanted my own horse.

Now, that you've ready my boring takes, go see Jen for more.

{Simple Saturday}

Linking up with Iris at Country Girl's Daybook for Simple Saturday, although this Saturday is anything but simple.

Today I am:

  • Packing
  • Grocery Shopping
  • Cleaning
  • Attending the Vigil Mass
  • Preparing Food
  • Preparing detailed lists and instructions

You see, tomorrow, we are leaving on a jet plane  in an automobile to drive down to VA for Ben to take the bar exam on Tues and Wednesday next week.  This is IT.  The culmination of THREE years of hard work and study.

We're taking the younger two and leaving the older two with grandparents.

Any prayers you have to spare (for a safe trip down and passage of the bar) would be GREATLY appreciated!

And, any tips you have for things to do with a 5-year old and 10-month old in Roanoke, VA would also be appreciated.

Five Favorites in Florida

Since our time as Florida residents is limited to about 6 more days (sob, sob), I'm going with a Florida theme and listing my five favorite things about living in Fl.

1.

These are the people in your neighborhood,
in your neighborhood,
in your neighborhood
These are the people in your neighborhood
The people that you meet when you go walking down the street
The people that you meet each day.

I LOVED living on campus during Ben's time at law school.  It's the first time we've ever really known our neighbors, and it was so much fun to hang outside in the evenings and chat it up while the kids run around playing.   I really loved the community we had here and knowing all our neighbors.

2.

Homeschool groups.
Naples is such a homeschool friendly town and there are such big homeschool groups, we've loved, love, loved being a part of.  We've made some really awesome friends, that we're really going to miss. (sob, sob) When my mom came down after Elsa was born, she was so impressed with the community here.  I had so many people dropping off GLUTEN-FREE meals for us...I didn't cook dinner for practically a whole month after she was born.

It's the people here, who've really  made our time so enjoyable.

3.
Pools.

I know I've listed this in my five favorite before, but I love the fact that everyone and their brother has swimming pools, so we've gotten lots of chances to swim here in Fl.  So much fun.

4.

The Gulf Coast
Gorgeous white sand, clear beautiful water.  Much as I love the craggy, rocky New England beach where I grew up, it just can't compare to the warm, clear, water and white sand of the Gulf Coast.

5.
Flip Flops all year round!
Love the fact that you can wear flip flops 12 months out of the year.

Not my feet, not my flip flops.

What I Wore Sunday: Pentecost

Happy Pentecost Sunday!!

A super, super nice thing happened to us at Mass today. Someone gave us a very generous check/gift (I assume for graduation)..super, super sweet of them.  I'm almost positive this person doesn't read my blog..but if you do...THANK YOU!!

Sadly, I did not wear red today....possibly because the only red articles of clothing I have are red sweaters or a red sleeveless shirt...neither of which are appropriate for a Latin Mass in Florida in May.   Or possibly, because I forgot it was Pentecost when I got dressed.

Elsa did wear red today...possibly because I remembered it was Pentecost and dressed her in red on purpose...or possibly because I just happened to grab a red dress to put on her.

Speaking of Elsa, she gets a B+ for Mass behavior today.  She started out doing really well, just sitting on our laps and playing with a toy.  Then she started playing the drop-the-toy-and-make-the-gentleman-next-to-us-pick-it-up-50-times-game.   So, I took her in the back for the rest of Mass and she was very good.

Ben did wear red today.  Probably because he dressed in red on purpose for Pentecost.

No one else wore red, possibly because we all forgot.

So this is my non-red outfit for Pentecost Sunday.

Supper flattering picture, no??  I have no idea why blogger is making my picture spread out and look like I'm 300 pounds.  Blogger must be trying to teach my humility.

Ha...but I got you blogger..you'll have to do better than that!  This is what I actually looked like.  I had to upload my picture to Shutterfly first and now it's coming up normal.

So...

Sweater:  Wal-Mart
Tank Top: Shade Clothing
Skirt: Given to me from a friend who moved away last year
Shoes: Given to me
Glasses: Zenni

I apologize (to you and everyone at Mass today) for the wrinkles in my skirt.  You see, my iron is all packed up.   Oh, who am I kidding...I wouldn't have ironed it anyway.  I'm allergic to ironing.   I blame my mom for passing on the anti-ironing gene.  My mom is probably shocked  to hear that I even own an iron (I do..I just don't use it).

So, go see what all the other non-wrinkled bloggers (who probably do own an iron and actually use it) are wearing at Fine Linen and Purple

7 Quick Take Friday

1.

Just call me handy(wo)man Amelia.  Our keyboard (which the girls use like a piano for piano lessons and to practice), had a broken power cord.  I have NO IDEA how this happened, but somehow all the wires fell out and were exposed and one broke.  It was the most bizarre thing ever...I have no clue what happened, but you could see the circuit board and thingamabobs and everything. .  But, anyway, ingenious me took the power cord from our electric drill (which we use..umm....never) and plugged it into the keyboard and it works.  Yay.

2.

And, speaking of things breaking, I just wanted to say how awesomely magnanimous Ben was about the fact that a certain child who shall remained nameless who was supposed to be watching a certain baby who shall also remain nameless while a certain mother who shall remain nameless was packing, let said baby spill a certain substance which shall remain nameless (some call it Diet Coke, but I prefer the term poison) on his laptop keyboard and now the keys don't work.

3.

You know how you might think you have a difficult child, until you have another child that shows you what difficult really is.   Yeah..um...well, that's Elsa.

This picture illustrates it perfectly.

Yes, the 8-month old is kicking the 5-year old in the head.   You can just tell that she's thinking. I may be the youngest, but ain't nobody gonna boss me around.
I
4.

Things are moving along for the move.  We sold our couches, which means we have nothing to sit on....but I really like the empty space.   I think I just want to stay couch-free.   Actually, I think I just want to stay everything free.   I'd be totally happy living in an empty house with nothing in it...no clutter, no mess...aaah...a girl can dream.

5.

And, while I was writing this, Elsa almost killed herself by pulling herself up to standing on a little night-stand and almost tipping it over.  Thankfully, it's sturdy enough and she's not strong enough to totally tip it over.    Now, I'm off to somehow secure that.  Or,  maybe I'll just get rid of it...more empty space.

6.

I learned this week through a Facebook discussion that swiffer cleaning pads and maxipads are made by the same company.  Therefore, I can just strap maxipads to my baby's legs and she can clean the floor as she crawls across.  Brilliant..no?

7.

And, I can't think of anything else to write, so I'll just say...please pray for us.  We are just a bit stressed right now, with the move and job searching and all that.  Thanks my dear readers!

And, go see Jen for more 7QTK

Congratulations Graduate!

Finally after three years of sweat (his) and tears (mine) and blood (just kidding on the blood part), Ben graduated from law school today!  I'm married to a lawyer!   We're so proud of you and happy that this world will have at least one ethical, honest lawyer.  Actually...I know a lot of his classmates here at Ave Maria School of Law will also be ethical, honest lawyers.

All the kids did super good during the long 2-hour graduation ceremony.  The people behind us, kept complimenting them on their behavior.

Here are my favorite pictures!

And, a family one!

John is his typical, 5-yo self with shirt half-way tucked in.  And, Elsa's not looking at the camera, but 2/4 kids look good..so that's 50%..not bad.

Now, on to conquer the bar exam and get a job!
Prayers appreciated!

7 Quick Takes Friday

1.

We're moving in just over two weeks, I am completely overwhelmed.  Everyone keeps asking me if I've started packing yet.  I'm just all. uhh no, I'm in denial about the fact that we are moving in about 2 1/2 weeks.  We have a ton of stuff to get rid of...which is stressful because people have been so generous to us, that I want to make sure I get rid of it to the right person instead of just randomly tossing or donating stuff.

2.

Ben's graduation is TOMORROW.  When we started this whole law school thing, three years seemed like such a long time.  It doesn't seem like so long anymore.

3.

And, does it make me a bad wife that I'm dreading sitting through a two-hour graduation ceremony...with four kids?  Neither Ben nor I went to graduation when we got our Master's Degrees...but law school is A BIG DEAL...so we go.

4.

Elsa started crawling this week.  Right while we are trying to pack up..perfect timing!

Who me?  Mess up stuff?  Get into trouble?  No way..look at this innocent looking face!

5.

Where we live now is a PERFECT place for walking, running, bike riding, scootering, skating,....we have beautiful, wide, tree-lined sidewalks right outside our front door..which means we go on family walks or the kids bike ride/skate around almost every night.  Where we are going in RI has no such place and who knows about where we will be in Virginia.  So, we're thinking about getting a wii to use with wii fit or something to allow for indoor exercise.   Or possibly an xbox with kinect,  but that is much more expensive.   Anyone have any other input/ideas/suggestions for  kids and adults to get exercise when there may not be a safe place for walking/running/bike riding nearby.

6.

And, I just have to share this cute pic!

Don't you dare try to steal my cupcake toy!!

7.

And, these are the types of pictures you get when you let your kids use the camera.

Greta taking a selfie.

And pictures of random stuff.

7QTF...The times...they are a-changin'

1.

So, Ben sent off his bar application to the fine state of Virginia today.  Whew!  It was like an entire book of his entire adult life.  And, there is the still the bar exam to get through at the end of July and jobs to find.
Deep breath, deep breath, deep breath.

2.

We moving in only 38 days...but who's counting?
more..deep breath, deep breath, deep breath

3.

BOSTON!   Check out these really weird photos of Boston being in lockdown.  Scary!  I mean, it's not even that deserted during a snowstorm.  And, it's not like people had warning and could run out and get their bread and milk first either.   Prayers for all my Bostonian friends...stay safe.

4.

So, I'm sure you've probably all heard about this already, but Eden Foods filed a lawsuit against the HHS Mandate.
Yay for Eden foods!!!  So glad to see a non-religious organization recognizing the affront to religious freedom that the HHS Mandate is.   And, seeing as how Eden Foods is an organic food company and "green", it's refreshing how consistent they are in recognizing the polluting effects of estrogen in the carcinogenic birth control pill that wind up in the water and are doing weird things to all the fishies.  If you're gonna go green...so green all the way.

5.
And, if you're looking for a worthy cause to donate to...consider the Grace Center Foundation.   It's run by a friend of mine down here in Naples..who moved down to Ethiopia as a teen, adopted three children at the age or 25 and now at age 32, has done a world of good for children and mothers in Ethiopia.  Some of the stories I've heard of life down there make my toes curl (think large rats and bugs running around people's homes).

6.

Homeschooling at its best...Greta is dissecting owl pellets at homeschool coop.  I wonder what delightful thing she found?

7.
It has officially reached too hot status down here in Fl.   I hate sweating.  Whine, whine, whine.

Now, go visit Grace, who is hosting for Jen and see some more quickies.

Catholic Woman's Almanac - Link Up

Monday
February 25
Feast of St Matthias

I am…

Thanking God for:
..our family's health
...our numerous friends...here in Florida and spread out across the country.
...air conditioning.  I have thanked God for this just about every day, since we moved to Florida.
...generous friends and acquaintances who have shared their baby items with me.

Reading:
...Fed Up...Winning the War Against Childhood Obesity.   I picked this book up at the library a week ago.  I'm not sure how I feel about, but it's a fairly interesting read.
...Real Love, Guaranteed to Last.   I got this for free on our kindle on the recommendation of my friend, Amy.
Have I mentioned how much I LOVE having a kindle.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.  I LOVE reading and there is nothing better than having hundreds of books stored on a tiny little device always ready at the fingertips.

Pondering:
...vaccinations...I somehow stupidly broke my personal rule about not getting sucked into debates on Facebook.  Mea culpa....facebook debates are a total time-suck.  But, it has gotten me thinking about them and the issue of forced vaccination.
Praying:
...for my husband, as he finishes law school and job searches and gets ready for the bar.
...for my children..that they will always enjoy good health..both physical and spiritual.
...for various friends who are dealing with sickness or other stresses.

Waiting For:
...our tax refund!!!!!!

Thinking About:
...what to make for dinner...at 6:00 PM.    Procrastination..thy name is Amelia.
...also, thinking about the monumental task Ben and I have before us...filling out the bar application.  Yikes!

Wearing:
...tan cargo shorts and a brown t-shirt.  Boring..yep!  Shoes..never wear them in the house..or outside the house if I can help it.  We didn't go anywhere today, so these are my "around the house" clothes.

Trying:
...to make a "car-cake" for John's birthday tomorrow.  I'm really good at making cakes taste good...but not so good at making them look good.  No doubt, the final result will be something of cake-wreck fameBTW..if you haven't visited that blog you, you totally should.  Because, your life really isn't complete until you see a cake that graphically depicts a baby being born.

Captured:

...this adorable picture from the beach yesterday.  Yesterday, we went to the beach to celebrate John's 5th birthday with some friends.  So much fun!

Could this get any cuter?  I don't think so!

And of course, this one of the handsome birthday boy!  I think he looks a bit like a little surfer dude.  Surfing is one thing you can't do in the Gulf...there are NO waves.   I have to laugh when they describe these teeny, tiny little waves as "choppy"..it's nothing compared to the mighty Atlantic!
