What I Wore Sunday

It's Sunday again...time for another edition of WIWS.  I love doing these link-ups..they keep me motivated to dress a bit nicer for Mass.

Anyway, if I look tired in these pictures, it's because I was up for like 2 hours in the middle of the night last night.  What kept me up you might ask?  Babies?  Sick kids?  Oh no..nothing as mundane as that.  This was a wake up scared and freaked out in the middle of the night because you watched a thriller before bed.   Last night, Ben and I watched Along Came a Spider, which was actually pretty good, if not a bit too violent.  Super surprising (to me anyway) twist the end..so that's always fun...until I woke up scared in the middle of the night and suddenly every normal house noise was SURELY the sign of an intruder.

I can't complain too much though...because on Friday night Ben watched Fireproof with me...which I'd been wanting to see for a long time, just because of all the brouhaha about it in certain circles.  For all the people raving about it, I actually didn't think it was very good.  The dialogue was forced, the plot was extremely predictable and the acting wasn't that great either.   Surely,Christians can do better than that.

Anyway...what was this post about..oh yeah... WIWS.  This isn't actually what I looked like during Mass.  During Mass this morning, most of my shirt was covered up with Elsa in my Maya Wrap sling and nursing cover, because I nursed/wore Elsa most of the Mass so she would sleep through it.    Don't have a picture of that though. It worked beautifully until the Amen, when she woke up with a start and spent the rest of Mass trying to pull her siblings' hair and snatch my glasses.

Shirt: thrifted
Skirt: Slade Clothing
Shoes: Given to me
Belt: amazon.com

Don't let that innocent looking face fool you.
.
Elsa's Dress: hand me downs
\Glasses: Zenni Optical

I couldn't decide whether it looked better with or without the belt.  I ended up wearing the belt during Mass..but I'm not so sure.  Looking at the pictures, I'm still undecided.   What do you think?

And, do be sure to check out everyone else's outfits at Fine Linen and Purple.

Have a Blessed Sunday!

7 Quick Takes Friday

1.
Thanks to Grace at Camp Patton for hosting this weeks 7QTF while Jen at Conversion Diary is dealing with her newborn in the NICU.   Pray for Jen and baby Joseph and their family

2.

My cute little coffee maker broke because a certain someone who shall remain nameless put the coffee grounds in the water part.  So, I am coffee-less.  How is a mama to cope?

3.

And, I accidently erased all the books and apps off our kindle fire and restored it to factory settings.  How one can do that accidently I do not know..as there should be like a quadruple password protected way to prevent that from happening.   So, now I am undertaking the LONG process of putting them all back on and organizing the books by which child for whom they are appropriate.  Fun times.

4.

And, how do you spell accidently?  My browser keeps screaming with lovely red underlining that the word is misspelled..but when I right-click on it, it only offers me the word identically.   Whatever Firefox.  Modern Manner Guy uses the spelling accidently, so what's good enough for MMG is good enough for me.  Plus, englishforums.com says accidently is an acceptable alternative spelling of accidentally..so I'm sticking with it.
5.

I let John use the Ipod yesterday to take pictures....so now I have a whole bunch of blurry pics of our messy house with fingers half blocking them,...but never fear...I shall spare you from those terrible pictures.  And, just show you these cute ones instead.

Sorry..just tilt your head to look at this one.

6.

Oh..and my laptop is broken too..so I have absconded with the kids' laptop;..because that's my mama privilege to do so.   And, don't you just love the word abscond?  I'm sure my 9th grade English teacher would be so proud.

7.

As long as our minivan keeps chugging along. (at least for 2 more months)..I'll be happy.  Who's the patron saint of old, on their last legs, broken down, automobiles?  Anyone know?

And this concludes my super quick, quick takes.

{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}

{pretty}

The law school had their annual Lex Vitae Fest to raise money to send students to the March for Life, and they had a bounce house for the kids.  So much fun!  Here is a pretty picture of a pretty girl!!

{Happy}

Babies that nap by themselves (and not in my lap)  make me happy.

{Funny}
They could barely lift those things.

And, in Naples, all the cool kids wear their dogs.

{Real}

It's raining...so what else to do, but go outside and play in the rain?

Theme Thursday: Grow

There is a lot of growing going on around here!

From plants:

Those are mini eggplants from 2011.  Aren't they cute.  Yes, I'm showing a pic that's two years old.  Right now, the  only thing I have growing in my little grow box is weeds (and don't worry, the weeds are not weed).  Ha!

To kids:

Don't you just love Heidi's expression.? She is 11 and wears my clothes and shoe size (9 BTW for shoes..I'm not giving out my clothing size).  Greta is 8 and John is 5.

And since today is her 7 month birthday..we  have to showcase Elsa.  Growing, growing way too fast.

Feels like she was just born yesterday.

And of course, we have piles of stuff that are growing.

Five Favorites

1.
,
The BBC Period Drama...Call the Midwife.  I'm in the middle of watching Season 1 on Netflix, and am highly enjoying it!  It's about a young, newly qualified midwife who moves into a convent (thinking it's a hospital) in the East End of London (an impoverished area).  Highly entertaining..and lots of great birth scenes...but even better it offers some great insights into love and life..and there are some really profound moments.

2.
-Super, easy-peasy, flourless peanut butter cookies.  The recipe is a cinch..just mix 1 cup peanut butter, 1 egg and 1 cup sugar.  Form into balls, flatten with a fork at and bake at 350 for 10 minutes.  So, so, so easy and yummy and good.

Not my cookie...I found this picture on morgue file.  My cookies don't last long enough to take a picture.
3.

Amelia's super secret, super easy, versatile, mix and match marinade/sauce.   Except it's not a secret anymore because I'm about to share it with you.  Aren't you sooooooooo excited!  I use this sauce on chicken and rice all the time and I always make it a bit differently and it always tastes delish.

The general gist is to mix 1 part acid (vinegar or lemon juice) with 1 part condiment (ketchup or mustard) and 1 part sweetener (honey or molasses).   Add in various other spices like salt, curry, pepper and you have an awesome marinade for chicken and rice.   Just pour it over your chicken while cooking and it imparts a delicious flavor and keeps the chicken really, really moist.

4.

The cooling rain on a hot, humid, sticky day in Fl.
I almost let out a huge Hallelujah when I walked out of Publix today and felt the drops.

5.

Upcycling old jeans into cute, little purses.   Yes..I made this.  Aren't you proud of me?

Now, go visit Hallie at Moxie Wife, swoon over pics of her newborn and see some more favorites.

A Bad Case of the Mondays

Warning:  This is one incredibly whiny, venting, post.  You have been warned.

This is how I feel today.

Today is one of those days.  Yes, THOSE days.  The kinda of day where your husband walks in the door, asks how everyone is, and you reply..Just be glad, we're all still alive.

Despite doing it numerous times before, Greta completely forgot how to do subtraction with borrowing.   I even looked up a video on Khan academy and had her watch it.  Yeah..that made it even more confusing.

Heidi, for some odd reason, decided to do a history chapter that was 8 chapters ahead in her book of where we were, and didn't notice that she was suddenly learning about a whole new time period???

Everyone is suddenly completely incapable of doing any school work without me walking them through every.single.thing.

The UPS guy came and woke up Elsa.

Our schoolbooks are falling apart and missing pages because the kids just throw them on the ground..despite how many times I tell them to treat them carefully.

My patience level is incredibly low right now.

Due to allergies, food intolerance (gluten and probably dairy as well) and being poor, I've cooked every meal from scratch for the last oh..2 years...and darnit, I just want to freaking order a pizza and not have to worry about dinner for once.

I think I'm sugar crashing after a week of major Easter candy indulgence..which is NOT helping my mood.

Elsa keeps biting me...and grabbing stuff, and destroying whatever she can get her hands on and throwing a fit if you take something away from her.  Yep..my 6-month old is throwing fits.  Fun times.

Job searching is going..not so well and I'm starting to panic and freak out a bit.

Elsa has the most screwy nap schedule ever and will not nap ANYWHERE but in my lap or in the sling.  And, now she's refusing to sit in the stroller without screaming and I have to put her on my back in the sling.  Let me tell you, she's lucky she's so cute.

Hmmm...what else?  In good news...as I said...we're all still alive.   And, tomorrow is Tuesday, which means it's not Monday...which means it has to be better than today..right?

I'm linking this up with Mindful Mothering Mondays which I discovered through my friend, Amy's blog.   This post is not nearly as encouraging or happy as those are though..so go over there if you want to read something more uplifting.  I think I've only hit on the trials and struggles part.   I'm feeling more maniac than mindful at the moment.  Oh well....tomorrow is a new day..and thankfully despite this terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day...not all days are like this...not even in Australia.

Children: Burden or Blessing?

I recently came across an article entitled The mother who says having these two children is the biggest regret of her life.   To be quite honest, I found it to be disturbing and my heart aches for her adult children who had such a hurtful statement publicly published about them.   But, I don't necessarily think she is/was a horrible mother.  She is just putting into words what our culture teaches.

The article is full of quotes like this:

I felt completely detached from this alien being who had encroached upon my settled married life and changed it, irrevocably, for the worse.

I'm wondering how she knows her marriage would have been better without the children?   It says in the article that her husband dearly wanted children...so perhaps not having them would have driven a rift between the couple? Who knows?

But, I do know that marriage is about sacrifice and compromise.  It is about putting the other person first and giving as much as your are getting.   I believe that many marriages fail because people believe that marriage is about What can you give me? instead of What can I give you?

Raising children is definitely a sacrifice and lots of hard work and a huge load of putting the other person first.  However,  many couples find that their marriage improves with the addition of children because the more one makes sacrifices and puts another person's needs first, the easier it becomes.  The sacrifices we make for our children, carry over into our marriage and make it stronger.
Still, I wished no harm on Stuart and invested every ounce of my energy in caring for him. Even so, I know my life would have been much happier and more fulfilled without children.
Again, how can she know what her life would have been like without children?  Would she have been happier?  I don't know.  But, I do know that someone  like Mother Teresa who spent her whole life serving others, seemed to be very happy.   I know that in my own life...times when I am the least selfish (and I can be very selfish at times) are the times when I am the happiest.   For it is in giving of ourselves that we receive (from the Prayer of St. Francis which St. Francis probably never said).

What I valued most in my life was time on my own; to reflect, read and enjoy my own company and peace of mind. And suddenly that peace and solitude wasn't there any more. There were two small interlopers intruding on it. And I've never got that peace back.

Don't we all?  She sounds seriously introverted.  I am somewhat introverted myself...and I do oftentimes long for more peace and quiet and time to reflect.  But, I don't for one second believe that having more peace and time to myself would make me happier.  A little more would be nice....but not a huge, empty void of childless peace.
I never wanted to hurt Stuart - I only wanted him to prosper and thrive. There is no doubt I grew to love him very much, and indeed still do. But I always wished I had never had him.
This statement seems rather paradoxical to me.  Love does not wish someone didn't exist. I do not understand how one could say in the same sentence I love you, but I wish you had never been born. For, if she hadn't had him..he would not be here.  She later talks about her son's wife and his two children...I bet they are happy he exists.   I bet her son and daughter have both touched the loves of countless other people...people who ARE happy they exist.
It was not that I seethed each day with resentment towards my children; more that I felt oppressed by my constant responsibility for them. Young children prevent you from being spontaneous; every outing becomes an expedition. If you take your job as a parent seriously, you always put their needs before your own.
This is true...very, very true.  But, that's not a bad thing.  Losing our natural, inborn selfishness is not a bad thing...in fact it is a very good thing.  But, our culture tells you that it is.  Our culture says that children are a burden, so hurry up and have your two kids and get them weaned and sleeping through the night and off to school and out of the house as soon as possible, so we don't have to be burdened with them anymore.   Once they are gone, we will have the freedom to jet off to Italy and eat at fancy restaurants and read important books and pursue big careers...because those things have so much more value than bringing new life into the world and raising children.  Our society tells us that being a burden is bad...so it's best if all the babies with down syndrome or other health issues requiring special care are aborted...and the old people, or those who are terminally ill, or in a coma...well they aren't worth anything either...so let's just euthanize them.

But that's all lies I tell you..all lies.  Everyone comes into this world as a helpless, newborn baby.  Everyone comes into this world as a burden.   As a burden..but also as a blessing  Every person's life is valuable..and I find it incredibly sad that Ms. Dutton does not see the value of her own children's lives.  Sad...but not surprising.

It is her tragedy that eight years ago she developed multiple sclerosis and had to give up her job as a chef. She is now bed-bound and lives with Tony and me.
I am her full-time carer and if I could have MS instead of her, I gladly would. She knows I would do anything to relieve her suffering and that I will care for her as long as I am able. I am 57 now and as I approach old age, I have an ever-more dependent daughter.
Yet I would cut off my right arm if she or Stuart needed it.
And that, maybe, is the paradox. I am a conscientious and caring parent - yet perhaps I would have resented my children less had I not been.

When it comes right down to it, it does sound as though Ms. Dutton does love her children...it's a shame that she didn't value them and their human dignity enough to not publicly or privately state how much she regrets them.  It's a shame that our society views children as a burden.  And, it's even more of a shame how many children aren't born because people don't want to be burdened with a blessing.
